Data Driven 2018

Event Panels

Spreadsheets in a Data Desert (10:00 am - 11:00 am EST)

Access to open data and freedom-of-information requests are a common, if not essential tool of data journalists. But what if the country you’re in lacks fundamental infrastructure like many public records or freedom of the press?  After being forced to flee South Sudan, freelance data journalist Carolyn Thompson and South Sudanese journalist Lagu Joseph, embarked on data-driven investigations from neighbouring Kenya and Uganda. Listen to Carolyn and Lagu Joseph discuss the difficulty and dangers of pursuing data in a hostile country.

Data-Driven Startups (11:00 am - 12:15 pm EST)

The 21st century has been a perilous time for many news organizations. But for others, it’s a new era of collaboration, experimentation and growth. We speak with three individuals coming from each of these areas.

Lunch ‘n’ Learn with Google News Lab (12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST)

Have you ever wanted to search Google specifically for databases? How about turning a spreadsheet into an interactive, geocoded map? Learn about the latest free tools from Google Newslab during a catered Lunch ‘n’ Learn session.

Data on the Beat (1:30 pm - 2:30 pm EST)

Incorporating data journalism into your daily beat may seem like a slow, impossible task. But those who have learned how to balance daily reporting with data driven analysis end up with impactful, award-winning investigations. Our three panelists have done just that.

Hands-On: Gathering Data from Satellite Images (2:45 pm - 4:45 pm EST)

Carolyn Thompson and Lagu Joseph demonstrate how data can be mined from virtually anywhere – including satellite photos.
