Humber StoryLab » New Report: Using OCCRP’s Aleph for Dark Web Data Analysis

For enterprising newsrooms, data breaches have flooded the Dark Web with data of immense public interest, but which poses significant security risks.

Humber College’s StoryLab has published a new guide to safely analyzing documents sourced on the Dark Web, using the open-source database tool Aleph.

This report, ‘Using OCCRP’s Aleph for Dark Web Data Analysis’, was made possible through an Applied Research and Technology Partnership Grant undertaken by Humber College and the Toronto Star.

Inside you’ll find:

  • An introductory “post-mortem” reflecting on why this project was undertaken, including ethical considerations of reporting on Dark Web data
  • A step-by-step guide to setting up your own Aleph database instance with two-factor authentication
  • Two appendices: A conversation with Distributed Denial of Secrets (DDoSecrets); and Basic Malware Awareness
